Pre Operative Instructions

It is very important that you follow these instructions prior to surgery.  If you have ANY questions about these instructions, the procedure itself or about which medications to take, please call the office.

  1. You must not have anything to eat or drink after midnight the evening prior to your surgery.  You can brush your teeth in the morning but you must spit out the water after you rinse.  If there are any medications you take in the morning, take these with a sip of water (see below which medications are OK).  Because children are less able to cope with not eating or drinking for long periods of time, they are usually scheduled first.  In general, the younger the child, the earlier their surgery will be scheduled.
  2. For 10 days prior to your surgery, the only pain medication you may take is Acetaminophen (Tylenol).  Any medication containing Ibuprofen or Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic Acid) is forbidden since they thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding during and after surgery.  Some of the common medications, vitamins and herbs which are forbidden include:
Alka-Seltzer Aleve Anaprox Aspirin Daypro Vitamin E St. John,s Wort
Dolebid Ecotrin Excedrin Feldene Fiorinol Ginseng Golden Seal
Halfprin Feldene Ibuprophen Indocid Lodine Ginko Licorice
Motrin Naprosyn Norgesic Nalfon Orudis Garlic Ginger
Oxycodone Percodan Soma Talwin Lortab Feverfew Echinacea
    Toradol Voltaren

If you have a question about which medication you can or cannot take, please call the office.

  3. If you take medications in the morning for an arrhythmia, heart problems, blood pressure problems, lung conditions, seizures or any other serious medical condition, you must take these medications with a sip of water the morning of surgery unless you are specifically directed not to.  If you are diabetic and take Insulin, take half of your morning dose the day of surgery.
  4. If you are having sinus surgery and your Cat Scan was done at another hospital, please bring the films with you.  If you do not have them, contact your surgeon to make arrangements.
  5. If you become ill or catch a cold before your surgery, please call the office.
  6. If you have travel plans, discuss these with the doctor.  There are strict flying limitations after certain procedures.

If you have any questions or concerns about your surgery at any time, please call the office at any time at 610-384-8300.
